Unveiling Seagate’s All-in-One Backup Device

Although it has only been available for a few short months, data center administrators who had been searching for a solution that is capable of managing and safeguarding data from different operating systems, databases and applications are already praising the functionality of the Seagate EVault Backup Target Appliance, or Seagate EVault BTA.

Featuring a full 65 terabytes of usable capacity, Seagate’s EVault Backup Target Appliance is ideal for customers who require a significant amount of storage space. Moreover, the hybrid cloud architecture of the EVault BTA, which is based on Seagate’s own hybrid cloud, offers both on-premise and remote storage.

There are a number of other benefits to the Seagate EVault Backup Target Appliance. As listed on the device’s data sheet, the Evault BTA provides “easier monitoring and reporting capabilities,” “backup validation to make sure the data is recoverable,” “optimized performance and storage with data deduplication and compression,” “robust managed cloud replication,” “data security using encryption” and “fast recovery from the locally installed BTA.”

As explained by John Bedrick, product line director of Cloud-Connected Products with Seagate, the Evault BTA is meant to serve a very specific purpose in the industry. He was quoted as saying: “The Seagate Evault BTA has been designed for database administrators who want more control and increased flexibility to deploy backups, where needed. Also key to the BTA is its unique hybrid architecture as the only appliance of its type able to backup to a private, public or partner cloud.”

Seagate’s EVault Backup Target Appliance isn’t the first device that’s being marketed to data centers. In fact, the EVault BTA is only the latest offering in a comprehensive line of products that is meant specifically for data centers requiring as much as 100 terabytes of storage capacity. The device runs on Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 and features 32 GB of RAM as well as 24 total drive bays. Operational redundancy is provided by the appliance’s two individual servers, which are configured within a failover cluster.

While the Seagate EVault BTA is an excellent choice for managing and safeguarding critical data, the device is best used in tandem with other Seagate products and services. As stated in the data sheet of the EVault BTA, “Managing information has never been so challenging. The Seagate EVault Backup Target Appliance can help you protect and manage your information, as well as streamline your data protection operations, so that you can begin to use this valuable information to drive business innovation. Plus, you can easily grow your data protection solution in a cost-effective manner with options like another appliance, Seagate EVault Capacity Software, or Seagate EVault Cloud Backup Service.”

The Seagate EVault Backup Target Appliance is available in a number of regions, including the United States, Canada, the European Union, Mexico, and more, as of May 2015.
